CTV and OTT can add premium video reach, but only when inventory, frequency, measurement and supply-path controls are specified before launch. This guide separates the channel terms, maps the buying routes, shows how to turn a quote into a comparable media plan and gives an India-ready pre-flight checklist. Cost examples are intentionally not presented as market benchmarks: CPMs change by publisher, audience, geography, season, deal type and included fees, so every figure should carry a supplier, date and scope.

Definitions, inventory and buying routes

CTV is the device environment-an internet-connected television or streaming device. OTT is streamed video content delivered over the internet across TVs, phones and other screens. Programmatic is one method of buying that inventory; CTV/OTT can also be bought directly. Map each line item to publisher or app, device, geography, language, ad position and seller. Buying routes include direct insertion orders, programmatic guaranteed, preferred deals, private marketplaces and open auction. Direct and guaranteed routes improve certainty; biddable routes can add flexibility but require stricter supply-path checks. Ask whether inventory is owned-and-operated or resold, who has the right to sell it, and whether delivery is app-level or aggregated. IAB Tech Lab’s current ecosystem guide covers VAST, OpenRTB, Open Measurement and CTV supply-chain standards: https://iabtechlab.com/connected-television/.

Build a comparable quote and three budget scenarios

Do not compare headline CPM alone. For each proposal record gross budget, working-media budget, media CPM, platform or DSP fee, data fee, verification fee, ad-serving/technology fee, creative cost, agency fee and tax treatment. Impressions = working media ÷ CPM × 1,000; planned reach = impressions ÷ target frequency, adjusted for expected duplication. Build three scenarios-test, learning and scale-using the supplier’s dated CPM and the same audience definition. For every scenario show planned impressions, unique reach, average frequency, geography, duration and the minimum delivery needed for a valid read. A plan with a lower CPM but excessive frequency or opaque inventory is not cheaper. Treat any India CPM range as directional unless the source, month, publisher mix, targeting and fee basis are disclosed.

Creative specification and insertion-order checklist

Confirm accepted duration, aspect ratio, resolution, codec, file size, audio level, VAST version, skippability, companion assets, click or QR behavior, subtitles, language variants and safe-area requirements with each seller; platform rules differ. Then put the operating controls into the insertion order: named inventory/app list, geography, audience method, frequency cap and lookback, daypart, content exclusions, brand-suitability category, invalid-traffic treatment, make-good terms, reporting cadence, data ownership, conversion-event definition and billing basis. Test the served asset on representative TV operating systems before launch. Use a clear opening frame, brand early, design for a large screen and do not assume a viewer can click with a remote.

Measurement hierarchy, BARC context and quality controls

Match measurement to the decision. Delivery layer: valid impressions, completion, reach, frequency and geography. Quality layer: app/publisher, viewability signal, invalid traffic and brand suitability. Outcome layer: search lift, site or QR response, store visits, leads or sales. Incrementality layer: matched-market, holdout or lift study where scale permits. CTV exposure is fragmented and co-viewing complicates person-level attribution, so a platform-reported view-through conversion is not automatically incremental. BARC’s panel methodology uses audio watermarks and metered panel homes to estimate television audiences; understand whether a proposal is using BARC television estimates, platform logs or a separate identity graph rather than treating them as interchangeable: https://www.barcindia.co.in/technology. For programmatic supply, require app-ads.txt/sellers.json transparency and ask whether Open Measurement is supported. IAB Tech Lab explains these controls at https://iabtechlab.com/standards/advanced-tv/ctv-programmatic-guide/ and https://iabtechlab.com/standards/open-measurement-sdk/.

Buy/don’t-buy decision and vendor questions

Buy when the objective needs incremental video reach, the target audience is available at useful scale, the creative can hold attention on a TV, frequency can be controlled and the measurement plan can answer a business question. Delay when the brand has not fixed basic conversion or attribution, the audience is too narrow, the budget cannot achieve minimum reach, inventory is undisclosed, or the pitch depends on last-touch view-through claims. Ask every vendor: Which named apps/publishers will run? Is inventory direct or resold? What are total fees and net working media? What frequency cap applies across devices? Which app-ads.txt, sellers.json, invalid-traffic and brand-suitability controls are enforced? What is the source of reach estimates? How are households and co-viewing handled? Which raw logs and placement reports will we receive? What is the make-good policy? Which study design will distinguish correlation from lift? Frequently asked questions

How much does CTV or OTT advertising cost in India?

There is no defensible single CPM. Cost varies with publisher, audience, geography, language, season, deal type, verification and included fees. Ask for a dated, itemized quote and calculate net working media, effective CPM, planned reach and frequency. If a benchmark lacks source, month, inventory mix and fee basis, do not use it for procurement.

What is the difference between CTV, OTT and programmatic?

CTV describes the connected television environment; OTT describes streamed video delivery across devices; programmatic describes an automated buying method. They overlap but are not synonyms: OTT can run on mobile, CTV inventory can be bought directly, and programmatic also buys non-video inventory.

Is CTV worth it for a small brand?

Only when the campaign can buy useful reach and frequency against a clear objective without starving proven lower-funnel work. A small brand should usually fix tracking, creative and conversion first, then run a bounded regional or audience test with explicit stop/go criteria rather than buying a prestige placement.

How should CTV and programmatic be measured?

Use a hierarchy: delivery, quality, outcomes and incrementality. Reconcile platform logs with independent verification, cap frequency, review app-level placement, and avoid crediting every post-view conversion to the ad. Where scale allows, use a holdout, matched market or lift study; otherwise state the limitation.

Google's October 2026 AI Content Guidance: SEO and E-E-A-T Checklist

Google updated its guidance on generative AI content on 1 October 2026, aligning the documentation more closely with its Search Quality Rater Guidelines. The update does not create a special ranking system for AI-written pages. It sharpens the standard that matters: content should serve a clear audience, demonstrate real expertise and make factual claims easy to verify. For Indian marketing teams using AI at scale, the operational question is no longer whether AI may be used. It is whether every published page adds original value, accountable authorship and dependable evidence.
