Google’s AI Shopping Journey in India: A 13-Touchpoint Planning Framework
Abhishek Dwivedi
Team Lead, SEO

Shopping journeys in India increasingly move between conversational search, visual discovery, video, product listings, retailer sites and physical stores. The “13 touchpoints” in this guide are a planning framework—not an official Google count. They help brands identify where product data, creative, landing pages, inventory and measurement must stay consistent as Google adds AI Mode, Gemini and visual-shopping experiences.
The 13-touchpoint planning framework
Use four discovery touchpoints: category questions in Search or AI Mode, inspiration in Gemini, visual discovery through Circle to Search and video discovery on YouTube. Use four evaluation touchpoints: product results, comparison tables, reviews, and brand or retailer landing pages. Use three purchase touchpoints: online checkout, marketplace or retail partner and nearby store. Use two post-purchase touchpoints: service or support and retention messaging.
A customer will not necessarily use all thirteen. The framework is an audit tool for finding contradictions and missing evidence across the journey.
Create evidence for discovery and evaluation
Build content around real comparison criteria: fit, material, compatibility, use case, total cost, service area, delivery time and limitations. Use original images and video that show scale, texture, assembly, operation or outcomes. Keep review summaries grounded in actual review data rather than invented consensus.
Connect discovery content to the correct product or collection page. A broad AI answer may introduce the category, but the landing page must help the shopper verify the exact variant, price, availability and policy before purchase.
Join online and offline purchase paths
For brands with stores, dealers or retail partners, keep location data and local availability accurate. Use consistent product identifiers in Merchant Center, analytics, CRM and point-of-sale systems so teams can understand which digital interactions assisted a store sale.
For online checkout, preserve campaign parameters, record consent appropriately and test mobile performance on common Indian network conditions. For marketplaces or affiliates, use the reporting and clean-room options available rather than claiming deterministic user-level attribution.
Measure the journey by stage
Discovery metrics include qualified visibility, engaged visits and new-customer reach. Evaluation metrics include product views, comparison engagement, return visits and assisted conversions. Purchase metrics include contribution margin, qualified leads, store outcomes, cancellations and returns. Retention metrics include repeat purchase, support resolution and unsubscribe or complaint rates.
Google’s India AI shopping update confirms shopping experiences across Gemini, AI Mode and Circle to Search. Use the existing agentic commerce readiness guide for a deeper operational checklist.

Google's October 2026 AI Content Guidance: SEO and E-E-A-T Checklist
Google updated its guidance on generative AI content on 1 October 2026, aligning the documentation more closely with its Search Quality Rater Guidelines. The update does not create a special ranking system for AI-written pages. It sharpens the standard that matters: content should serve a clear audience, demonstrate real expertise and make factual claims easy to verify. For Indian marketing teams using AI at scale, the operational question is no longer whether AI may be used. It is whether every published page adds original value, accountable authorship and dependable evidence.
